The lightweight unification clash between WBA 135-lb champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and IBF champ Vasily Lomachenko is being targeted for November in Las Vegas.
Lomachenko’s promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, told @FightsATW that if a deal can be reached, the fight with Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) would be in November.
Negotiations & Potential Obstacles
Arum states that they haven’t spoken to Al Haymon of PBC in over a year, and Carl Moretti of Top has been speaking to Luis DeCubas for the talks.
Hopefully, Tank Davis’ side will not have problems making this fight happen because it’s too late for the 36-year-old Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) to be further delayed.
Lomachenko has been interested in fighting Tank Davis for the last six years, but the feelings haven’t been mutual between him and his management.
It’s believed Tank Davis’s side chose to marinate it to the point of being overdone. Whether Tank’s previous promoters at Mayweather Promotions or PBC made that decision is unclear.
Tank’s management needs to move away from marinating fights because he’s missed out on many matches during his 11-year career and has only had one successful PPV event against Ryan Garcia.
A Changing Dynamic
Gervonta, 29, is expected to be the favorite against Lomachenko due to his youth, but it wouldn’t have been that way if the fight between them had been made six years ago when Loma first showed interest in fighting him.
Lomachenko is coming off an impressive 11th-round knockout win over former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. on May 12th in Perth, Australia.
Many boxing fans saw that as a vintage Lomachenko performance where he looked as good as he had earlier in his career, dominating Kambosos Jr the entire contest before putting him away in the eleventh round in front of his own Aussie fans.
In Lomachenko’s previous fight last year, he’d lost a controversial twelve-round unanimous decision against a much bigger Devin Haney on May 20, 2023, in Las Vegas. Haney looked like a 154-pounder after he rehydrated for that fight, but it didn’t help as was dominated in the second half of the contest by Lomachneko.
