Former IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez (30-3, 17 KOs) reportedly suffered a small brain bleed in his tenth-round knockout loss to Angelo Leo (25-1, 12 KOs) last Saturday night, August 10th, at the Tingley Coliseum, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.
ESPN reports that Lopez, 30, is recovering from the small brain bleed that he suffered last weekend against Angelo Leo.
Troubling Referee Decision
What was troubling about this fight was how the referee gave a count while Lioez was on the canvas, flat on his back after being dropped hard by a left hook from Leo in the tenth round.
The way Lopez fell back first without bracing his fall and laid still for a moment was a sign that the referee should have stopped the fight immediately. Instead, he surprisingly gave Lopez a count until he counted him out.
Afterward, people on social media criticized the referee for not immediately waving it off and having the medical team enter the ring to check on Lopez’s condition.
Lopez’s Career in Question
There’s no word yet about whether the Mexican native Lopez’s career is over or if he’ll choose to continue after this. He’d been struggling in the fight with Leo’s skills, and he couldn’t hurt him with his big power shots or slow him down like he’d done with many of his other opponents in the past.
Lopez struggled from the eighth round because of the shots Leo was hitting him, and you could see he was tired. The pace of the fight and the many shots Leo had hit Lopez took a lot out of the IBF champion, leaving him vulnerable and entering the tenth round.
Fans on social media are calling for Lopez to retire after this. They’re worried for his health, but it’ll be his call. It’s unclear if he’s made enough money to retire.
