Flyweights Galal Yafai and Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez Jr are slated to meet for the interim WBC flyweight title on DAZN
Matchroom Boxing claimed the rights to stage the WBC interim flyweight title fight between Galal Yafai and Francisco Rodriguez Jr today, winning the purse bid unopposed with an offer of $222,222.
Jake Donovan reports that the fight, which would earn the winner a shot at unified champion Kenshiro Teraji, “is targeted for June/July.”
Yafai (9-0, 7 KO), who claimed Olympic gold in Tokyo, earned the biggest win of his pro career last November by beating Sunny Edwards into retirement. Rodriguez (39-6-1, 27 KO) isn’t as decorated, but he figures to pose a stiff test if he can make the weight after a long stretch at 115; he hasn’t been stopped since “Chocolatito” Gonzalez finished him in 2013 and he’s put up strong fights against the likes of Kazuto Ioka.
We’ll let you know if and when Matchroom puts this one on the schedule. Should be a scrap.
