Mikaela Mayer is past Sandy Ryan, and now has her sights on Lauren Price and undisputed glory.
Mikaela Mayer retained her WBO welterweight title with a rematch win over Sandy Ryan tonight in Las Vegas, and has her sights set on a bout with WBC, WBA, and IBF titleholder Lauren Price, to crown an undisputed champion at 147 lbs.
Mayer beat Ryan a bit more comfortably this time around, taking scores of 97-93, 97-93, and 98-92. Bad Left Hook unofficially had it 96-94, with Mayer (21-2, 5 KO) winning on a very strong first half and an aggressive, hard-charging 10th and final round.
Mayer was able to land a good amount of hard shots on Ryan (7-3-1, 3 KO), but the English challenger did claw her way back into making this competitive in the second half of the bout, even if the scores don’t totally tell that tale.
“I think (the difference) was just me sitting on my shots and committing to my hooks more,” Mayer said. “Those hooks were coming over the top. Sandy tends to stand straight up — she comes forward, she’s strong, and she puts the pressure on, but she’s straight up and down so we worked on chopping her down with those hooks over the top.”
Mayer also said that her two-fight series with Ryan is just part of a greater trend in women’s boxing.
“It was a great two fights. I think that the women are getting better and better, and I think me and Sandy just set the new bar for what competitive fights should look like,” she said. “Going into this fight, the odds were even. Those are the type of fights the women are putting on — even fights, 50/50 matchups, and those give you these type of performances.”
