After negotiations fell through with Kevin Lele Sadjo and Diego Pacheco, Christian Mbilli could meet Maciej Sulecki this summer

Manouk Akoupyyan reports that WBC no. 1 super middleweight Christian Mbilli will face no. 7 Maciej Sulecki for the interim title on June 27th.

It’s been a long and stupid road to get here. Julius Julianis and Carlos Linares revealed back in January that undefeated contenders Osleys Iglesias and Luka Plantic had begun talks for a potential interim title fight. At the same time, Mbilli (28-0, 23 KO) looked on track to fight Kevin Lele Sadjo (24-0, 21 KO) in a final eliminator after Sadjo promoter Y12 won the purse bid.

Mbilli’s promoters, Eye of the Tiger Management, wound up pulling their charge from the fight amid disagreements with Y12. The WBC seemed to agree that the latter was at fault, as they subsequently ordered Mbilli to fight Diego Pacheco for the interim belt, but Matchroom pulled the plug shortly before the purse bid.

So here we are. To be fair to Sulecki (33-3, 13 KO), a former longtime middleweight who peaked in the late ‘10s, he’s actually at his highest point in some time. While he got his organs forcibly decommissioned by Pacheco last September, he scored his biggest win since 2019 this past February by knocking out Ali Akhmedov in Kazakhstan.

In a sane world, a win here would tee up the victor for a Canelo payday within the next 12 months. Unfortunately, it’s Mauricio Sulaiman’s world and we’re just living in it.
