Christian Mbilli vs Maciej Sulecki & What It Really Means for the WBC Picture
Christian Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs) will face Maciej Sulecki (33-3, 13 KOs) this Friday, June 27, in a 12-round fight for the WBC interim super middleweight title at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada. The bout streams LIVE on ESPN+ at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT / 11 p.m. UK.
Mbilli’s team finally got him a big stage and a belt to chase — just not the belt. This one’s a shortcut around fighting real contenders like Osleys Iglesias, who would’ve likely sent him into orbit. So they picked Sulecki — older, beatable, and less lethal. But that doesn’t mean safe.
If Mbilli wins, great. He’s technically next in line for Canelo… in the same way you’re “next” at the DMV when the guy ahead of you brought 30 forms and no ID. If he loses? The whole project falls apart.
Can Christian Mbilli handle the pressure or will Sulecki crash the party?
Mbilli didn’t sound nervous on the mic:
“We’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. Friday will be a day of glory. The belt will be coming home.”
Then he made it personal:
“There has to be someone who pays the price. And I think Sulecki will have to pay for it on Friday.”
But let’s rewind. Mbilli barely escaped Derevyanchenko last year — a one-armed Derevyanchenko. The same Derevyanchenko who was 39 and falling apart before the first bell. Mbilli got hit too often, looked flat, and didn’t back up any of the hype.
Enter Sulecki — 35 years old and still wrecking people. He stopped Ali Akhmedov in Round 10 earlier this year and did it in Kazakhstan, under pressure. That’s not a “stay busy” opponent. That’s a veteran with tricks and a nasty counter right hand.
Sulecki didn’t waste his mic time either:
“Mbilli is strong and aggressive, but sometimes wild. I know what I have to do. He has to fight me first.”
He’s not here to collect a check. He’s here to throw a wrench into someone else’s plans. And frankly, he’s done it before.
What happens if Mbilli wins — or if he blows it?
The WBC will dangle Canelo’s name like bait, but don’t hold your breath. There’s a long line ahead of Mbilli — Benavidez, Berlanga, Munguia. And Canelo doesn’t exactly do mandatories unless there’s a yacht involved.
This fight’s real purpose? Keep Mbilli marketable. Keep him headlining in Quebec. If he struggles again, the aura fades. If he loses? He’s done at the world level.
As for Sulecki? One upset win, and he turns the rankings upside down. He becomes the “tough out” nobody wants. And if he pulls it off in hostile territory again, it won’t be luck — it’ll be legacy.
