Jaime Munguia has not fought in Tijuana since February 2022
Top Rank announced over the weekend that super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia, previously pegged to face Ronald Gavril on December 14th in Tijuana, will instead meet unbeaten Frenchman Bruno Surace in an ESPN+ main event.
The press release doesn’t offer undercard details, but BoxRec lists Luis Nery as part of the show.
I gave Munguia (44-1, 35 KO) props for facing a credible bounce-back opponent in Erik Bazinyan instead of mauling some hapless goon, but Surace (25-0-2. 4 KO) fits more into the litany of kinda decent fighters Munguia beat while “acclimating” to 160. The 26-year-old is a natural middleweight with just eight victories over opponents with records at or better than .500.
Munguia’s one saving grace is that, as I mentioned last time, this marks his fourth fight of 2024. It’s his most active year since 2018, and it’s easier to stomach a stinker if it came packed with three good matchups.
Munguia said, “I’m very happy to be back in the ring and, above all, to be back in Tijuana. This year has been full of hard work and great fights, which has only motivated me to keep pushing forward. I want to give Tijuana a great night of boxing and thank everyone there for always being by my side and supporting me. It won’t be an easy fight, but we’re confident we’ll come out on top. Viva Mexico and Viva Tijuana!”
