There is presently no deal signed for Frenchman Bruno Surace to rematch Jaime Munguia, although talks between the two camps are ongoing.
Surace stunned super middleweight star Munguia on December 14, landing a terrific right hand to score the Upset of the Year for 2024 as a huge underdog. Mexican Munguia had been in control, and had floored Surface, but the resilient Frenchman powered through with a heavy right that was also a Knockout of the Year contender.
Team Surace, who are presently in London for The Ring awards, said they have been offered a return with Munguia in April, but nothing is confirmed, despite speculation that the rematch is headed back to Mexico on April 12.
“You should not listen to rumours,” said Abdel Achour. “We haven’t signed anything. We are still in negotiations. They offered us the contract for April.”
Surace told BoxingScene in the aftermath of the Munguia victory that he knew a win in Mexico could change his life.
“I didn’t think about the people who didn’t believe in me. My main thoughts were about the people who believed in me,” he said, having improved to 26-0-2 (5 KOs).
Munguia, who had gone the distance with Canelo Alvarez earlier in the year, and who also defeated John Ryder and Eric Bazinyan in a busy 2024, dropped to 44-2 (35 KOs).
