Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ assistant coach, Kenny Ellis, says there won’t be a rematch with Ryan Garcia following his racist remarks this week on social media.
Coach Kenny Ellis, the assistant coach for WBA lightweight champion Tank Davis (30-0, 28 KOs), has ruled out Ryan getting a rematch. He says he needs to go “see a shrink.” However, Ellis doesn’t call the shots for who Tank Davis fights.
“We don’t want the rematch. Nope. Never. Tank will never fight him,” said Coach Kenny Ellis to MillCity Boxing when asked if Ryan Garcia’s racial comments this week will prevent a rematch between him and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
“He [Ryan Garcia] just f*** up. F*** him. He knows what he did. He needs to go somewhere and see a shrink. F*** him.”
Tank Needs Ryan, Not the Other Way Around
Given that Ryan is the bigger star than Tank Davis, it’s more of whether the Baltimore native can get a rematch with him. Tank’s PPV numbers had been poor until Ryan fought him. He’s the needy one.
Tank needs Ryan, not the other way around. If Tank asks real nicely, maybe Ryan will grant him a boon and honor him with a second fight.
Ryan is arguably the biggest star in the U.S. right now, and Tank occupied the #2 spot. Tank’s post-Ryan fight royally flopped, showing what many had already known. The huge PPV numbers for the Tank-Garcia fight were due to Ryan.
In Tank’s first fight after the Ryan mega-payday, he returned to his low PPV numbers as before in his match against Frank Martin on June 15th. Tank’s Cinderella moment is over, and he’s returned to the low numbers he’d been bringing in for years. He’s just not a big draw unless he’s fighting Ryan and hitching a ride.
In contrast, Ryan’s PPV numbers for his fight with Devin Haney are rumored to be considerably better than Tank’s match against Martin. So, who needs who?
Gervonta Needs New Coaches
Tank Davis will need someone to train him for his fight against Vasily Lomachenko in November. His current coaches aren’t likely going to be able to teach him anything new, beyond what they already have, and that’s not enough.
Tank needs some coaches to elevate his game before it’s too late because Lomachenko will box circles around him, schooling him worse than he did George Kambosos Jr.
