Lamont Roach loses his appeal with the New York commission over the knockdown which was absurdly overlooked.
Amidst the uproar over the way Gervonta Davis’ fight with Lamont Roach was handled and the official result that came of it, Roach had filed an appeal with the New York State Athletic Commission as he sought to overturn the results of the fight on the basis of the obvious knockdown that was not ruled against Davis. Roach, however, would be predictably denied.
As reported by ESPN, the commission’s reason for the denial was stated, in part, as follows:
“The bout continued for more than three full rounds after the referee’s no knockdown call, and because the boxers necessarily adjusted to the referee’s ruling, the referee’s call was not outcome-determinative.”
The ruling also commented that although a knockdown would’ve been the most appropriate call in the situation, it was within the referee’s discretion and authority to make the determination he believed most appropriate. Furthermore NYSAC would argue that if the knockdown had been ruled, it cannot be known whether or not the final three rounds of the fight would’ve played out the same way. Therefore, the official draw between the fighters will stand.
Roach’s attorney would say that they are disappointed with the ruling from NYSAC but are hopeful that Roach will get and win a rematch against Davis in the near future.
