Oleksandr Usyk looks set to add to his plethora of year-end awards after he was listed by the Boxing Writers Association of America in their Fighter and Fight of the Year categories.
Unified heavyweight champion Usyk made the Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year ballot alongside fellow heavyweight Daniel Dubois, light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev, unified cruiser champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez and junior bantamweight ruler Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez.
BWAA members met on Saturday via Zoom and it was determined that Usyk’s first contest with Tyson Fury made the list for the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier Fight of the Year award along with the all-British heavyweight slugfest between Joe Joyce and Derek Chisora, Raymond Ford’s classic last-ditch featherweight win over Otabek Kholmatov, the junior middleweight thriller between Vergil Ortiz and Serhii Bohachuk, which Ortiz won via narrow decision, and the junior flyweight bout between Japanese star Kenshiro Teraji and Carlos Canizales.
Set to contest the Trainer of the Year award, named after Eddie Futch, are Don Charles, Robert Garcia, Freddy Fundora, Rudy Hernandez, and Yuri Tkachenko while the Cus D’Amato Manager of the Year award is between Egis Klimas, Keith Connolly, Vadim Kornilov and Brian Peters.
The ballot for the Marvin Kohn Good guy award features Russ Anber, Bruce Silverglade, Don Turner, Steve Pratt and Sam Jackson and Andrew Roberts have jointly been nominated
The Barney Nagler Award for Long and Meritorious Service in the sport will go to Brad Goodman, Randy Gordon, Henry Hascup, Don Majeski or John Sheppard while the John McCain-Bill Crawford Courage Award will be awarded to Prichard Colon and family, Billy Dib, Christy Martin or Vanes Martirosyan.
