Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya says he prefers that Ryan Garcia forget about a rematch with Devin Haney and wants him to fight WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez instead.

With Ryan’s charisma and a huge following on social media, a clash between him and Teofimo (21-1, 13 KOs) would bring in a lot of pay-per-view buys on DAZN.

No Rematch needed

It would be a match that would attract fans worldwide because Teofimo is still seen as an unbeaten fighter in the eyes of many people because his loss to George Kambosos Jr. was a narrow one that could have gone either way.  That was when Teo was sick and injured.

Turki Al-Sheikh is reportedly negotiating the rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. It still doesn’t sit right with De La Hoya, who sees Devin as having already been conquered by Garcia in his one-sided 12-round drubbing of the Bay Area native.

Haney should get back of the line because he has his chance against Kingry, and he utterly failed. All this crying Haney has done since then about Ryan’s failed test looks bad, showing that he can’t admit that he was beaten. You have to bet that if the rematch happens, Haney will use Ryan’s failed PED test as his marketing strategy throughout the promotion.

Image Concerns

It would be a massive negative for Ryan’s career to have Devin and his dad, Bill, reminding fans about him testing positive for Ostarine in every interview. Even if Ryan wins again, his image will be forever tainted just due to the constant bad-mouthing by the Haneys.

There could be problems if Haney tries to railroad Ryan into agreeing to VADA against his wishes. He feels suspicious about Devin and his dad, Bill Haney, pushing so hard.

De La Hoya sees no point in Kingry fighting a vanquished opponent, Haney, as he beat him soundly last year on April 20th. Running it back for no real reason other than money isn’t good enough. Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) can do much more.

Golden Boy’s Plan

“Me personally, I see no need for it. Ryan destroyed him, and that’s the bottom line,” Oscar De La Hoya said to Fight Hub TV about him seeing no need for a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. “We have to make the best fights possible.

“There are fighters that we can match up Ryan with anyone and make a terrific event. If [Kingry and Teofimo] are the best at the moment, and that’s what people want to see, we have to make it,” said De La Hoya.

A fight between Ryan and Teo would sell and create fan interest. However, Haney isn’t a PPV attraction, lacks charisma, and has little to say in interviews. His dad, Bill Haney, gets fans interested in his fights.  Dev already had his chance, so he blew it.

Haney was no match in that fight, and the only reason he saw the final bell was that the referee saved him in the seventh round.
