Filipino southpaw Pedro Taduran captured his second world title with a surprise ninth-round victory in Japan over Ginjiro Shigeoka.
The 27-year-old overcame some early difficulties but Shigeoka suffered damage to his right eye in the fourth and the Japanese star couldn’t cope with the pressure coming his way.
Eventually, fellow southpaw Shigeoka wilted in the ninth round in Otsu City and the fight was over with 10 seconds remaining in the session.
Taduran was swarming forwards and Shigeoka had his back to the ropes and was not punching back when referee Steve Willis stepped in.
Shigeoka, 24, lost for the first time in the pros and is now 11-1 (9 KOs), while Taduran improved to 17-4-1 (13 KOs).
Taduran has now won his last three and won his first world title at the second time of asking when he defeated Samuel Salva for the IBF minimumweight belt.
