Caleb Plant’s tune-up fight against fringe contender Trevor McCumby, scheduled for August 17th on Amazon Prime, has been postponed. This is a non-PPV event by PBC, and there’s been little promotion. Many fans didn’t even know Plant was fighting.
According to ESPN, McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) was cut during training and won’t be ready to fight next month. No word by PBC didn’t replace McCumby with someone else for the former IBF super middleweight champion Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) to fight on that date.
Plant-McCumby was viewed as a low-level fight, and the injury to the little-known McCumby shouldn’t have been enough for PBC to cancel the entire card for August 17th.
Someone else should have been brought in as a substitute for the 32-year-old Plant, because this fight hasn’t excited the public. PBC could find almost anyone to step in, and it would be an improvement over McCumby as Plant’s opponent.
PBC should have replaced McCumby with one of these fighters:
– Jermall Charlo
– Edgar Berlanga
– Demetrius Andrade
– Diego Pacheco
– Jaime Munguia
– Sergiy Derevyanchenko
– Christian Mbilli
– William Scull
At least fans have heard of these guys, and Plant would receive much more attention for his fight on August 17th than he’s gotten thus far.
The old timers, Demetrius Andrade and Jermall Charlo, would be ideal options for PBC to quickly insert as replacements for Plant. They haven’t fought in ages and could use some activity to keep their floundering careers going a little longer.
Plant hasn’t fought since losing to David Benavidez by a twelve-round unanimous decision on March 25, 2023. It’s unclear why Plant has sat for the last 16 months without getting back in the ring because he says he wants to get a world title shot, but he’s not going to do that by staying inactive for a year and a half.
If Plant wants to salvage his career, he must fight more often against better opposition than McCumby. That’s not the guy he needs for him to get ranked high enough to get a lucrative rematch against Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
That’s the fight that Plant is gunning for. Plant got a big payday fighting Canelo in 2021 and wants another crack at fighting him. He’s not going to do that sitting out of the ring for 16 months and coming back against a random guy that not even hardcore Boxing fans have heard of.
