Regis Prograis wants his WBC light welterweight belt back from Devin Haney due to him rehydrating 18% to 165 lbs after weighing in at the 140-lb limit for their fight on December 9th last year in San Francisco, California.
Prograis Unaware of Weight Discrepancy During Fight
The 25 lbs that Haney rehydrated for the fight gave him a weight advantage over Prograis (29-2, 24 KOs), who says he didn’t find out about how heavy the challenger was until he got home after losing the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision.
Given Haney’s weight, it’s unclear why it was allowed to proceed without being canceled. If Prograis had been hurt in the fight, there would have been a huge backlash over the match being permitted to go ahead with Haney weighing in so heavy.
“I wasn’t aware of it until after the fight after I came back home,” said Regis Prograis to MillCity Boxing, talking about how he only discovered after his fight with Devin Haney that he’d rehydrated to 165 lbs for their title clash last December in San Francisco.
“On the fight night, you don’t know nothing about that. When I was in California, I didn’t know nothing about it. I let it go. Since y’all said it, I have to look into it.
“Yes,” said Prograis when asked if he had the opportunity to get his WBC light welterweight belt back due to Haney having rehydrated to 165 lbs for their fight last December.
“Boxing is so corrupt. I know in my fight with Devin, he was over. In California, you have different rules. You’re not supposed to be a certain weight over the limit. You’re not supposed to be over a certain weight. Devin was over that certain weight.
“So, literally, that fight wasn’t supposed to happen, and literally, you can’t do that, and it was. That’s the case,” said Prograis.
