Quinton Randall gives himself a C+ for victory over Janelson Bocachica

In a matchup between battle-tested welterweights, 33-year-old Houston native Quinton “Quickdraw” Randall, 15-2-1 (3 KOs) scored a unanimous decision (96-94, 97-93, 99-91) over Janelson “Jawbreaker” Bocachica, 17-3-1 (11 KOs) on Friday night in the main event of Red Owl Boxing’s BOXFEST XI on DAZN from the “Owl’s Nest” in Houston.

“I give myself a C+ performance,” Randall said. “It’s not my best, man. Not my best. He’s a dog. He’s a warrior. I knew he was coming to fight. I knew he was coming to fight [and] I appreciate him for even accepting the fight knowing he’s away from home and knowing this is my home, but honest to God, no matter where we was at, we was gonna get the same result.  

“It was good and he’s a tough guy. I’m gonna be sore tomorrow.” 

Throughout the opening rounds, it was clear that Randall, known as “The Alpha Wolf,” had the hand speed advantage, mixing up his attack to the head and body and controlling the pace of the fight. 

As the contest went on, the 25-year-old Bocachica, who was coming off a no contest against WBO 147lbs titleholder Brian Norman Jr. and looking for his first victory since 2021, noticeably grew frustrated as he had difficulty finding openings and was unable to establish a strong rhythm. 

In the final stretch, Randall continued to have the upper hand, putting the pressure on Bocachica and using a strong jab to set up powerful right hands and other impactful shots, earning him the unanimous decision and his second consecutive victory. 

In the co-main event, 28-year-old Tipton “Rose Gold” Walker Jr. (10-0-1, 6 KOs) scored a unanimous decision (77-75, 77-75, 78-74) victory over “Marvallis” Marquis Moore (11-2, 7 KOs) in an eight-round bout. 

After a competitive first round that saw both men start fast, Walker, who held noticeable advantages in both height and reach, began looking to implement his gameplan in the second, although the 33-year-old Moore landed a few powerful shots as the round came to a close. 

Halfway through round four, “Rose Gold,” who has now won back-to-back fights in 2024 after having not competed in 2022 and 2023, landed a big left hand before seemingly beginning to pull away ever so slightly in the next. 

During the second half of the bout, Walker continued to mix up his attack, constantly searching for uppercuts, while continuously digging to the body. 

Moore, who hasn’t fought since 2022, had difficulty finding openings, although he never gave up, throwing and landing some powerful shots in the final round. It was too little too late for the 33-year-old, however, as he couldn’t land any fight-changing shots, leading the judges to name Tipton the winner. 

“I could’ve did better,” Tipton admitted. “I could’ve did more. But, he’s a good fighter, so I don’t take nothing from him. To get to the next level, I had to get past him, so back to the drawing board.”

Also on the main card, rising super lightweight prospect and Houston-native Giovanni Marquez (11-0, 6 KOs) put on a show in front of his hometown crowd, picking up a second-round TKO victory over Thomas Guillemette (8-3, 4 KOs) at 140lbs. 

“That’s what the fans want to see,” Marquez said in his post-fight interview.  “I come to give the fans a show and that’s what I did today.

“That’s what we’re gonna continue to do. To be a star, you’ve got to do star stuff like this.”

Despite the first round being rather uneventful, the 23-year-old Marquez, the son of former junior middleweight champion Raul Marquez, got off to a strong start, quickly establishing his jab. 

In the second round, however, Marquez closed the show, flooring Guillemette with a brutal right hand. Although the 23-year-old Frenchmen rose to his feet, his legs were no longer under him and referee James Green had no choice but to halt the action. 

Marquez has called out Kurt Scoby and former world champion Ryan Garcia. 

Earlier on DAZN, 17-year-old Kumar “The Raw One” Prescod (1-0), a nine-time amateur champion making his professional debut, made quick work of Skyler Mauller (0-2), scoring a dominant second-round TKO victory.

From the opening bell, Prescod, a native of Oakland, California, made it clear that he was the superior boxer, using high-level movement and expert timing to evade Mauller’s pressure and quickly begin to pick him apart with counter strikes. 

The second round, meanwhile, proved to be the beginning of the end, as Prescod picked up the pace, landing a variety of power shots on Mauller and dropping him twice before forcing the 24-year-old’s corner to stop the fight. 

Opening up the main card on DAZN, Dayan “The Cuban Sniper” Depestre (5-0-1, 3 KOs) scored a one-sided unanimous decision (40-36, 39-37, 39-37) victory over Trevon Smith (2-4, 1 KO) in a rematch after the two fought just last month. 

“We prepared a little bit better this time,” Depestre said. “We worked a lot on concentration. This time, we came concentrated and that showed in the results tonight.”

Over the course of the opening two rounds, the 24-year-old Depestre, who also scored a decision victory over Smith in their first meeting in September, started quickly, pressing forward and landing some impactful body shots. 

In the third round, however, the Cuban began to open up, clearly landing the bigger shots as he backed a seemingly worn down Smith up against the ropes and unloaded combinations to the head and body. The fourth and final round saw more of the same, as Depestre once again unloaded towards the end of the round, landing powerful shots and looking for the finish. 

The 28-year-old Smith, known as “The Unknown,” accepted this bout on extremely short notice and to his credit, he continued swinging until the final bell, but in the end, he came up short and it was Depestre who walked away the victor.
