The old six-round sparring video of Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Devin Haney, which shows their well-known war at the Mayweather Boxing Gym, was released today.

It looked like Tank Davis wasn’t taking it seriously until the last part, where he tore into Haney, who needed to be rescued. Poor Tank was fighting two people inside the ring, Haney and Floyd Mayweathier Jr. It wasn’t fair.

The last part of the sparring video had already been released, but not the early rounds, during which Haney was getting the better of the action. Haney looked good early on while Tank was covering up and playing possum.

Tank looked so calm throughout the early portion of the sparring session, but something inside snapped; he went for the kill, massacring Haney in the last couple of rounds.

Mayweather Plays Coach and Cheerleader for Haney

What was interesting was how Mayweather was seemingly acting as Haney’s coach and referee while encouraging him. When Tank turned it on, he had Haney reeling. He wasn’t competitive, and it was obvious that if this were a real fight, it would have ended suddenly, just like last night’s fight between Gervonta and Frank Martin.

The sparring doesn’t tell us anything because it was so long ago, and both guys wore headgear. Haney looked good while Tank was covering up in the early rounds, but when he turned it on like a switch, it was a route.

You could tell from some of the shots that Tank landed that Haney would have been knocked out if it were a real fight.

Haney’s Career on the Rocks

With Haney losing his last fight and his career on the rocks, the sparring video of him and Tank Davis means zero.

It’s not going to get fans interested in paying to see a fight between them because Haney’s popularity has nosedived since his loss to Ryan Garcia last April. That defeat destroyed Haney’s credibility, and fans now view him as arguably the weakest link at 140 of the champions.

Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) needs to try to come back from his loss by defending his WBA light welterweight title against his mandatory Sandor Martin unless he wants to vacate his belt, which maybe he should do if he’s having problems getting down to 140.
