Robbie Davies Jr is ready to end his long layoff after a freakish injury with a win that puts him into contention for a world title.
The 34-year-old junior welterweight from Liverpool, England will face the former IBF junior welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets on Wednesday, May 8, at the ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida – live on the ProBox TV App.
Davies Jr (23-4, 15 KOs) knows what is at stake for him – it is his career. After an 11-year professional journey and resurrection with three straight wins, he lost to Darragh Foley in March 2023. Davies Jr suffered a bad ankle injury in the fight that rendered him unable to continue and ended his hopes of a world title shot in his immediate future.
“It was a freak accident,” Davies said. “We don’t really see things like that anymore in boxing.”
It will be more than a year since Davies last fought, and now Davies is in a 50-50 fight.
“Coming off the back of an injury, having a long layoff and not knowing what was next, this was the sort of fight I needed to put my stamp back on the sport,” Davies explained. “I want to let people know I am still one of the better fighters in the division.”
Lipinets (17-3-1, 13 KOs), 35, is coming off a loss to Michel Rivera. The former champion is 1-2-1 in his last four fights. They both enter with a lot to lose and even more to gain at this point. With both in their thirties, a loss here might become a mountain not worth climbing.
Davies believes this is the type of fight to reignite his career.
“It is what I need to get my career back on track,” stated Davies honestly. “Hopefully with a win, it will put me back in the limelight for some of these bigger fights.”
Armed with a new trainer, former world champion Anthony Crolla, Davies looks to end his layoff in style and parlay the win into a marquee fight.
