Rolly Romero says old sparring with Ryan Garcia doesn’t matter, and that it’ll be about the real fight on May 2.
Rolly Romero will move up to welterweight for a big fight with a returning Ryan Garcia on May 2, headlining a Riyadh Season card in New York.
Romero was asked about a somewhat famous sparring session the two had years ago, but brushed it off, saying that they’ll find out with the real fight in May.
“If I was clout-chasing — he didn’t have clout at that moment,” he said. “He didn’t have anything. But it’s just sparring. we’re going to see the real fight in the ring on May 2nd. We’re going to make it a big fight, one of the biggest fights in U.S. history.”
Romero (16-2, 13 KO) also said he long ago predicted that he and Garcia (24-1, 20 KO) would meet as welterweights, and that the time is right for him to make the move to 147.
“I called this years ago, that me and him were gonna fight at welterweight, and this is when we were both lightweights,” he said.
“I’ve long outgrown 140, I definitely outgrew 135 long, long ago. When I was at 135, I should have been at 140, when I was at 140, I should have been at 147. I’m, like, all muscle. … (Struggling with weight) affects everything — timing, explosiveness, it really affects you.
