Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is predicting a win for WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis tonight in his title defense against Frank Martin in Las Vegas.
Rolly, who was knocked out in six rounds in his biggest career payday by Tank in 2022, feels that he’s going to do a number on the unbeaten Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) in their headliner on PBC on Prime Video PPV at the MGM Garden Garden Arena.
“Tank is going to f*** him,” said Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero to Fighthype, predicting a victory for his former conqueror Tank Davis tonight.
Tank Back from His Extended Vacation
The 29-year-old Gervonta Davis has been out of the ring for 14 months since his win over Ryan Garcia in April 2023, and it’s unknown how he will perform, given that he’s not shown much interest in his career since he got that giant payday.
When a fighter takes an extended vacation of over a year to enjoy the millions they made, they’re rarely in top form when they do return to the ring.
Tank might be okay in this case because he’s facing Frank Martin rather than one of the killers at 135, but he might not be. Davis has taken his foot off the gas on his career like Adrien Broner did with his career, and we’ve seen what’s happened to him.
If Tank follows his usual pattern, he’ll take a year off from his fight with Martin and return to the ring in the summer of 2025. He tends to go on extended victory laps, enjoying the fruits of his labor.
You can’t blame Tank for not wanting to stay active because boxing is hard work, and getting back into the ring to suffer through training and food denial is not fun.
A beatable guy, Martin was chosen as a semi-tuneup level opponent because Tank would not come off another long layoff to fight someone risky like Shakur Stevenson, Vasily Lomachenko, or William Zepeda.
Rolly’s Desperate Plea for a Rematch?
What’s unclear is if Rolly is trying to butter up Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) in hopes of him throwing a bone to him for a badly-needed rematch to give him another last payday or if he believes he will be victorious tonight.
It’s no secret that the former WBA light welterweight champion Rolly’s career is on thin ice right now after he was dethroned by Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in an eighth-round knockout loss last March.
The way that Rolly looked in that fight and in his match before that, it’s difficult to picture him going much further with what’s left of his career without a miracle, as we saw with his controversial stoppage win over Ismael Barroso in May 2023.
Advice for Frank Martin
“You ain’t standing in front of Gervonta Davis. Frank Martin, stick and move. Don’t stand in front of that man,” said Stephen A. Smith on his YouTube channel, advising Frank Martin what he must do tonight against Tank.
“I am looking out for your health. You want to get the hell away from Gervonta Davis. You do not want to have this man walking you down and stalking you while he’s throwing these haymakers.
“Nah, not Tank. You’re not going to see that bother doing that. Gervonta has iron in both hands. They call him the lightweight version of Iron Mike Tyson.”
