Ryan Garcia is still getting a lot of mileage from his destruction of Devin Haney last April in New York. On Wednesday, he took to social media to note how one fan was screaming when he dropped Haney. You can’t blame Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) for reminding fans about his victory. The left hook that Ryan dropped Haney with in the seventh round was a picture-perfect shot.
Haney’s Attempts to Rewrite History Fall Flat
Devin (31-0, 15 KOs) has been posting a lot recently, seemingly trying to whitewash what happened to him in the Garcia fight. He comes across as still mentally shaken from the bad experience. If the idea is for Haney to persuade fans that he only lost due to Ryan’s positive test for Ostarine, it’s not working.
Haney has to fight Ryan again and prove that he’s better in the rematch by staying on his feet and winning. Anything else won’t work. He won’t resurrect his popularity by reminding fans about Ryan’s positive test.
Haney’s plans to return to the 140-lb division to challenge Liam Paro for his IBF title on December 7th in Australia could be a mistake.
That’s a bad idea because if Haney loses, and he probably will, a rematch with Ryan may fly out the window. The money for the Haney vs. Garcia rematch would be far less if Devin is knocked out by Liam Paro (25-0, 15 KOs) in December. Haney will be useless to Ryan if Paro destroys him. The rematch won’t be worth anything after that.
The Inevitability of a Rematch
So unless Haney’s offer for the Paro fight is absurd, he shouldn’t face him. Please wait until after the rematch with Ryan to challenge Paro for his belt. Parp will still likely be the IBF champion. If Haney defeats Ryan in the first half of 2025, he can then take on Paro in his next match, and it would result in crazy numbers in Australia on PPV.
