Ryan Garcia’s exhibition match against Rukiya Anpo on December 30th is in doubt after his promoters, Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy, stated that they hold exclusive rights for his fights.

Ryan has been quiet since Golden Boy’s statement, only posting once on X, using an emoji, showing his frustration. It’s still unclear if the event can proceed if Ryan and the company can get the approval needed. Fanmio will need to work a deal with Golden Boy for the event to happen if it’s to involve Ryan Garcia, Whether that can happen soon is unknown.

If Ryan is hurt or beaten by the much bigger 6’0″ Anpo during the exhibition, it could negatively impact his future fights on PPV. That’s not a good thing for Golden Boy.

That would be a huge negative for Golden Boy, as Ryan is humiliated by Anpo and gets thrashed by him, which is entirely possible given his size and power. Anpo did a number on 45-year-old Manny Pacquiao last July in an exhibition.

Given that this is a PPV event on December 30th, the organizers must negotiate a deal with Golden Boy and De La Hoya to allow them to continue promoting it. This is the type of event that will need a lot of creative marketing to get fans excited enough to want to purchase it on PPV.

Yesterday’s Garcia-Anpo press conference was an excellent beginning in attracting interest with the theatrical feel to it, with Anpo throwing a piece a paper at Ryan, and then shoving him. It’s just a shame that all that could be wasted if a deal can’t be reached by Fanmio and Golden Boy.

There’s speculation about whether Ryan and the company organizing the event, Fanmio, can get the approval required by Golden Boy to go ahead with the eight-round exhibition. Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) normally posts frequently, but he’s nothing saying anything.
