Ryan Garcia’s dad says Devin Haney might not take the rematch with his son.  At this point, he’s not sure Haney wants it because of how badly Ryan beat him on April 20th in his twelve-round majority decision defeat at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Henry feels that if Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) does choose to fight Ryan again, it’s for the money because this stock has dropped from the loss. He thinks Haney would then take the fight against Ryan and retire.

Haney’s talk about wanting to take a year off indicates that he doesn’t feel he can make similar money fighting anyone else during Ryan’s remaining nine months of suspension and doesn’t want to risk getting beaten by someone.

Garcia’s Golden Opportunities

According to Henry, Ryan could face one of these three fighters when he returns from his suspension:

  1. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis
  2. Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz
  3. Teofimo Lopez

If Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) has those three options, he really doesn’t need a rematch with Haney because his stock has dropped too far for him to be helpful as a B-side opponent.

Haney would be a drag on the promotion, hurting interest in the fight because fans would view him as having a chance in the rematch with Ryan.

The best way for Haney to prevent a further drop in his popularity would be to get a couple of solid wins during the next nine months. That would be the best way for Haney to improve his chances of being given the rematch with Ryan and not hurt the promotion.

Unfortunately, Haney probably won’t do that because he won’t want to take chances of getting beaten once or twice and being sent into retirement.

Money Talks, Stock Drops

“There ain’t going to be a rematch because they don’t really want it. They don’t know which way to go. First, they [Bill & Devin Haney] said, ‘No, I’ve been hurt.’ Now, they’re like, ‘Wait a minute. We can make more money. So, maybe we should say, let’s do the rematch,’” said Henry Garcia to Campas On The Beat when asked if a rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia will happen.

Haney doesn’t have anyone else he can fight that will make him the kind of money that he can get fighting Ryan.

Devin’s options:

  • Gervonta Davis won’t bother with Haney, and that’s the only guy he could potentially make a lot of dough fighting.
  • Teofimo Lopez isn’t a PPV fighter
  • Isaac Cruz: Risky fight for Haney, and it won’t pay well.
  • Shakur Stevenson: Not a PPV draw

“They don’t really know, but deep down inside, they don’t want it. It would be really bad [for Team Haney],” said Henry. “And maybe that’s why he wants the rematch because he [Haney] wants more money because his popularity went down. His stock went down. You know that.

Cash-Out Potential

“So, it’s like, ‘What else is there? Let’s make as much money as we can, and let’s get out,’” said Henry Garcia about Haney.

Henry has Haney figured out, and he could be right. If Haney faces Ryan again, it would likely be a cash-out in the traditional sense, in which he gets a final payday and retires afterward. The money won’t be enough for Haney to live on billionaires’ row in the Hamptons in New York, but he’ll be able to buy a beautiful house in ‘the flats’ section in Beverly Hills.

That’s the more affordable section of Beverly Hills. Of course, if even the flats is out of Haney’s price range, he can move to nearby West Hollywood, where the houses are more inexpensive.

“I would something like that [rematch with Gervonta Davis], Teofimo or Isaac Cruz definitely in 10 months, and they all want it. So, we’re here to fight,” said Henry about the fights he wants for his son, Ryan Garcia, once the remaining nine months of his suspension ends.

There’s an excellent chance that Ryan will get his pick of the big three – Tank, Pitbull, and Teofimo – when he returns from his suspension. Again, Haney needs to get a couple of solid wins to enter into Ryan’s orbit for the lucrative rematch to get the life-changing dough to move to Beverly Hills or wherever he wants.

Garcia’s Confidence in Facing Top Talent

“Yes, of course,” said Henry when asked if Ryan can beat WBC & WBO junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora. “I’ve seen Ryan fight guys that tall and that weight, and he’s dropped them really bad.”

Ryan’s powerful left hook would more than makeup for his lack of height against the 6’5″ Sebastian Fundora at 154 if he chose to go in that direction. That fight won’t pay nearly as much as a rematch with Tank Davis.

“I’m telling you, that left hook is dangerous, and he’s got a good right, too. I’ve seen it. If he said it, I believe him,” said Henry.

Ryan’s left hook is so powerful that if he connects with it on any junior middleweight, it’ll have the same effect on them as Haney.
