Sandy Ryan holds the WBO welterweight title
Chris Mannix reports that after dropping two questionable decisions on English soil, Mikaela Mayer’s next title bid will see her challenge WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan on September 17th at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Amusingly, this once again pits Mayer (19-2, 5 KO) against rival Alycia Baumgardner, who faces Delfine Persoon in Atlanta that same evening.
Ryan (7-1-1, 3 KO) suffered a tough loss to veteran Erica Anabella Farias in her fourth pro fight, but has since come into her own, avenging that defeat soon after and beating undefeated Marie Pierre Houle for the belt eight months later. A subsequent bid for undisputed glory saw her settle for a bogus draw with Jessica McCaskill, after which she returned to the win column by thrashing Terri Harper last March.
This is just a rock-solid fight. Mayer was deeply unfortunate to not get the win against Baumgardner and Natasha Jonas; she remains one of the best and most consistently entertaining female boxers in the game. She and Ryan should put on a quality scrap.
