Sam Goodman risking Naoya Inoue opportunity against Thachtana Luangphon

Australian junior featherweight contender Sam Goodman cannot afford to slip up when he takes on unbeaten Thai Thachtana Luangphon at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Goodman (18-0, 8 KOs), from New South Wales, is on the brink of a lucrative clash with Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue, possibly later this year, and is ranked No. 1 by the WBO and IBF.

But rather than wait for his shot, Goodman has opted to stay busy for what will be his fifth fight in 13 months. In an interview with BoxingScene earlier this year, he insisted he would stay on his schedule and stay ready.

Goodman marks a significant step up for Luangphon (25-0-1, 15 KOs), and the Australian contender insists he is more than ready to deliver in a venue that is not far from his home against the little-known Thai.

“I’ve seen what I have to see. I know he’s a good fighter, he’s world ranked and he’s obviously here to fight,” Goodman said. “I know he’s looking at this as almost an audition for him to get that shot [against Naoya Inoue].

“I’m laser focused on this one and haven’t looked past this, and I’m ready to go. I’m excited to bring another big show here to Wollongong and do it all over again. It’s been a bit more low-key than last time around, but it will be rowdy come fight night.

 “We always bring the noise, always bring the heat. It’s going to be an unbelievable atmosphere here. I’m grateful for all the support and those coming to the event and buying the pay-per-views. It’s going to be a great event.”
