JAMESTOWN, Calif. – Junior welterweight Samantha Ginithan, hoping to change the outlook of her career, agreed to take on a prospect with only two weeks to prepare.
Ginithan and Jennah Creason will fight today (Wednesday) at the Chicken Ranch Casino Resort in Jamestown, California.
Ginithan of Las Cruces, New Mexico, has had just one professional fight. Yet the 34-year-old feels the clock is already ticking on her professional career.
Both fighters made weight and were cordial facing off. Darnell Pierce, Ginithan’s coach, is realistic when speaking about the fight, but doesn’t see the fight as a crossroads bout. “I feel it is more of a make or break for Jennah than it is for Sam,” Pierce told BoxingScene.
“I never want to lose,” Ginithan, 1-0 (1 KO), added. “Stylistically I feel this is a very good fight for me. I can clearly win.”
Pierce began to train her six months ago. They met through Team Combat League and quickly she fit in with Pierce’s other top fighters, Danielle Perkins and Darius Fulghum. What stood out about her was that she stuck around and showed the kind of mentality required to succeed in boxing. Ginithan showed up day after day, week after week. Now, she is going to be in a fight that could advance her career quickly.
“I would call it an accelerator fight,” Pierce said. “To go from nothing to at least being seen.”
Pierce equates this to what his heavyweight just went through, Danielle Perkins. Perkins took a step-up fight against Claressa Shields and though she lost, she gained fans and respect from that fight in Flint, Michigan.
Ginithan, a southpaw, made it clear that despite being 16 years older than Creason, 2-0, of Visalia, California, she is coming to win. Ginithan, a 5ft 7ins southpaw, represents the second leftie Creason has fought in her burgeoning career.
“Every fight my mindset is to be relentless,” Ginithan said. “To have no mercy and to make sure my opponent feels my power.”
