Serhii Bohachuk has volunteered to be the next Challenger for WBC and WBO Junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora for his next fight in March. Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KOs) has seen two of his options for his next fight rejected by the World Boxing Organization in the last week.

Initially, Fundora had planned to defend against Errol Spence (28-1, 22 KOs), but the WBO chose not to sanction the fight. Their reasons were that Spence hadn’t fought in 1.5 years. coming off a loss had never fought at 154, and wasn’t ranked in the WBO’s top 15.

Fundora’s team reportedly wanted to use Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs), but he wasn’t ranked in the top 15 either, so he was no good or an opponent.

A Dangerous Challenge

The former WBC interim 154-lb champion Bohachuk is ranked #8 WBO, which would make him perfect for Fundora to use as an opponent for his March 30th fight. The only problem is Fundora’s management may not want to use Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs), because he’s dangerous.

Although Fundora proved that he could beat a slugger last year in Tim Tszyu, it’s a different story with Bohachuk. He’s not someone who loads up on single shots the way Tszyu does. He throws constant heavy-handed punches in the same way Artur Beterbiev does, and he’s good at fighting on the inside. He can generate a lot of power on the inside. Tszyu couldn’t do that.

If Team Fundora wants to work their way down the list of WBO’s top 15 contenders, they might not be happy having Sebastian fight someone like Charles Conwell or Xander Zayas either. Those are two fights, just like it would be if he fought Bohachuk.

If Fundora feels he’s up for it, he should take the fight with Bohachuk because he’s free and he’s volunteering to fight him. That’s half the battle.
