Shakiel Thompson continued his progression in the middleweight division after a dominant win over David Benitez on Friday at the Park Community Arena in his hometown of Sheffield, England.

Thompson was recently in discussions to face IBF and WBO champion Zhanibek Alimkhanuly and looked levels above his opponent. After four dominant rounds, Thompson finished Benitez of Mexico with a well-placed body shot.

Thompson, now 14-0 (10 KOs), started the contest stalking his prey and establishing his long lead southpaw jab. Before long, Thompson found his range and started to whip in shots to the midsection of the helpless Benitez, 11-10 (3 KOs).

Thompson, 27, landed a low blow early into the second round that sent Benitez sprawling to the canvas. The Mexican made the most of the shot and dramatically wailed on the floor for the full five minutes of respite he was permitted. Benitez, 30, made a quick recovery after referee Steve Gray informed him he would be stopped if he did not return to his feet.

Later in the round Thompson dropped Benitez again with a low blow but Benitez recuperated much more swiftly this time. Thompson continued his pursuit of Benitez in the third, and midway through the session dropped his man with, this time, a legal shot to the body.

The Mexican barely made the count and although he complained about several more shots above the belt, made it through the round. As the fourth session began Benitez appeared to be looking for a way out. The Mexican would let his hands go in spells but as soon as Thompson connected with one of his spiteful body shots, he began to complain.

Benitez sunk to the canvas after Thompson dug in another couple of shots to his liver. He did not return to his feet this time and returned to his corner gingerly after Gray waved off the contest at one minute and 30 seconds of round four.

Hopefully Benitez returns to the ring more willing to fight.
