Shakur Stevenson came out of the woodwork to explain why he’s fighting Joe Cordina next on October 12th, telling the fans that he’s “Chasing the bag.”
He’s calling himself “International Kur,” basically his confirmation that he’ll fight the recently knocked-out former IBF super featherweight champion Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs) on October 12th in Riyadh.
Greed Over Greatness
It would be interesting to know how much money Shakur is being paid for this mismatch. With the way Shakur has been talking about money in today’s social media posts, it sounds like he’ll get the biggest payday of his seven-year career for this terrible fight.
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) isn’t taking the roasting he’s getting on social media well because he has nothing to tell them other than his truth, which is he’s fighting for money and not legacy.
In other words, greed has taken over for the 27-year-old Shakur, essentially this era’s version of Adrien Broner, winning division world titles against weak opposition.
This fight against Cordina could ruin what’s left of Shakur’s popularity if he runs from him and chooses not to engage like we saw against Edwin De Los Santos, Jeremiah Nakathilia, Joet Gonzalez, Robson Conceicao, and Artem Harutyunyan.
“LOL. I’m not fighting for y’all no more [bleep]. 😂 International [Sha]Kur active now. #ChasingGreatness,” said Shakur Stevenson on X, reacting to the criticism he’s receiving from fans over the news of him defending against Joe Cordina next in an undercard slot on October 12th.
“Unappreciative [fans] think they matter. Nah, not to me. Smd cry me a river 😭😭. This is a business and it’s make as much money as you can in this business.”
Prioritizing Financial Gain
Shakur could have fought some real killers like Raymond Muratalla, Frank Martin, Edwin De Los Santos [rematch], or Andy Cruz, but he’s chasing money instead of greatness. It’s pathetic, but at least Shakur has pulled the curtain to show fans what he’s all about.
“People want me to sit and wait around for Literally every other fighter to make they decision whether they want to fight me. I’m gone go get this bag over here real quick because that’s what matters most to me now 💪🏾 #ChasingTheBag 💰” said Shakur, letting his fans know what his main priority is. Money over quality fights.
Shakur’s last fight was against Artem Harutyunyan last July, fighting a light-punching guy who had been beaten by Frank Martin a year earlier.
