Shawn Porter: Errol Spence will need to come back with aggression

After being roundly beaten and turning over his welterweight title to Terence Crawford in a unification fight last July, it’s fair to wonder whether we’ve seen the last of the best of Errol Spence Jr.

On ProBox TV’s “Deep Waters,” analyst Shawn Porter speculated about whether Spence, now 34, still has “that dog” in him – specifically whether his one-time opponent still has the aggressive fearlessness to match the brutal effectiveness he demonstrated in his prime.

“If Errol Spence doesn’t come back aggressive,” Porter said, “if he doesn’t come back trying to get into the wheelhouse, trying to break guys down the way he used to, the No. 1 [thing] I want to see from that standpoint: Is it a true game plan or are you really just hesitant?”

A rumored bout with two-belt welterweight titleholder Sebastian Fundora may shed some light on the subject, but Spence – having spent a year out of the ring and walked away from longtime trainer Derrick James – has plenty of work ahead to prove he still rates among the elite at 147 pounds.

“At the end of the day,” Porter said, “I want to see Errol Spence Jr. be Errol Spence Jr.”
