Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ trainer, Calvin Ford, says Tank’s not the same fighter he was the last time he fought a year ago due to the legal stuff he’s gone through as he heads into Saturday’s fight against Frank Martin.
A Year of Legal Limbo: Has Tank Improved?
Ford insists that the legal mess WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) has undergone has done something to him, although he doesn’t say what precisely.
We’re left to assume that Tank Davis has become more mature in the last 14 months and will be new and improved when he enters the ring to defend his WBA ‘regular’ lightweight title against the unbeaten Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) on PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Of course, being out of the ring for over a year could have the opposite effect on Tank Davis, causing a drop-off in his performance that would negate his maturity. Sometimes, becoming older and wiser doesn’t help when discussing age.
It’s not good to get old in boxing, and it’s not smart to be out of the ring for over a year at any point in a fighter’s career, especially when they’re hitting their 30s.
Tank’s Transformation
“I just know he’s not the same person the last time we seen him in the ring. He been through a lot of stuff,” said trainer Calvin Ford to Premier Boxing Champions, talking about Gervonta Davis.
I bet Tank Davis isn’t the same person he was the last time he fought in April 2023 against Ryan Garcia. Tank’s problems since the last time he fought have been a nightmare, but he had to deal with it.
If he gets through this fight against Martin, he needs to ensure that, moving forward, he stays out of trouble and remains as active as possible because his age is creeping up on him.
There are many talented contenders in the lightweight division who will take advantage of Tank’s inactivity and age, and he can’t keep sitting out of the ring for extended periods if he wants to stay on top.
“Making him make the transition from being incarcerated to now and dealing with courts, that’s a trauma and a half for you if you’ve ever been through that kind of stuff,” Ford continued about Tank Davis.
“I’m already a legend from where I came from and what I done. I been through mad stuff. Sleeping on floors in crack houses, all that kind of stuff,” said Tank Davis. “I been through all that.”
