WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis weighed in at 133.4 lbs, while challenger Frank Martin came in at 134.4 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in for their headliner this Saturday night on PBC on Prime Video PPV.
Benavidez and Gvozdyk Fight for interim WBC Title Fight
David Benavidez weighed in at 174.2 in the chief support weights, and former WBC champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk weighed 174.2 for their 12-round fight for the WBC interim 175-lb title.
In the face-off, Gvozdyk looked bigger and more muscular than Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), who looked like he was carrying a little extra fat around his midsection.
Benavidez tends to put on weight between fights, but he didn’t have to trim down as much as he normally does because he moved up in weight to the 175-lb division.
Benavidez’s Size Advantage Absent
It’s strange to see Benavidez not having a massive size advantage over his opponent because he usually looks like he’s two divisions bigger. We’ll see how Benavidez handles fighting someone his size, greater power, and more technical skills than him.
For many fans, Benavidez-Gvozdyk is more interesting than the main event between Tank and Martin because it’s expected to be competitive. Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) is seen as getting the fight because he is with PBC.
The event begins at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT this Saturday, June 15th, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“There’s a reason why he could overlook him because they have history. They boxed, and Benavidez had his way. He even boxed Gvozdyk and even dropped him,” said web host Teddy Atlas to Probox TV, talking about David Benavidez sparring with Oleksandr Gvozdyk years ago.
“There’s a chance that he’s overconfident, and I love Benavidez,” said Atlas. “There’s a possibility that they could be looking past him [Gvozdyk]. We don’t know if he can beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk. We don’t know if he can get past the winner of Bivol vs. Beterbiev.
“I’m seeing him progress what I think he’s going to be. I think he’s going to be the face of the sport if he can keep these wins going,” said Chris Algieri about Benavidez. “I think he’ll be fine at 175, but we got to see how his body reacts to a different weight class.
“When you’re in a different weight class, you’re a different machine.”
