Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr may get to settle the score this coming summer

Mike Coppinger, confirming earlier reporting from Brunch Boxing, brings word that Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Lamont Roach Jr will run back their controversial draw on August 16th in Las Vegas.

Though the reigning WBA champion at super featherweight, Roach (25-1-2, 10 KO) seemed like a hugely underwhelming Plan B to keep Davis (30-0-1, 28 KO) busy after negotiations with Vasiliy Lomachenko fell through. Instead, Roach appeared to comfortably best Davis even with a blown knockdown call, only to settle for a majority draw.

Though referee Steve Willis blatantly erred in not docking Davis a point for taking a knee and running to his corner to wipe his face, the New York State Athletic Commission upheld the result, justifiably arguing that the last three rounds would have proceeded differently had Willis made the correct call. It’s frustrating, but the logic is sound.

Luckily, it looks as though Roach will get another shot, though he’ll have to wait another three months for no readily identifiable reason. Definitely won’t help with his logjam of contenders, most notably interim champion Albert Batyrgaziev.
