Teofimo Lopez posted on X today, asking his promoters at Top Rank what his “buyout” number is so he can get out of the remainder of his contract.

Why this sudden burst of energy from Lopez asking his promoters for the buyout number?  He could see the free agent Devin Haney fighting on BLK Prime on March 25th and likely making good money. Teo may want to get in on the act.

Teofimo’s Top Rank Exit?

As a free agent, Lopez might get snatched up by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, or he could choose to follow Haney’s strategy of staying in that capacity.

The WBO light welterweight champion Teofimo (21-1-1, 13 KOs) seems to believe that he’ll get bigger fights once he leaves Top Rank, but it’s questionable whether that will happen. Teo’s loss to George Kambosos Jr. and controversial wins over Jamaine Ortiz and Sandor Martin showed he’s a limited fighter.

How does Lopez not know his buyout number? His manager should be able to give him this information. Top Rank has done a man’s job with Teofimo during his career. It’s not their fault that he’s looked so poor since his one big career win against Vasily Lomachenko in 2020.

Teofimo is currently expected to fight former IBF light welterweight champion Subriel Matias on March 15th in a non-PPV event on ESPN. There’s a good chance Lopez could lose that fight, as he’s looked terrible against Jamaine, Sandor, and Steve Claggett.
