Tevin Farmer revealed today that he’s in talks for a rematch with unbeaten lightweight contender William Zepeda.

The former IBF super bantamweight champion Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) is getting a second chance against Zepeda (32-0, 27 KOs) after losing to him by a 10-round split decision on November 16th on the Latino Night card in Riyadh.

Farmer- vs. Zepeda II

If it’s a 12-rounder, Farmer may end up getting knocked out because he looked worn down from from the eighth round from the hard body shots that Zepeda was hitting him with in that fight.

The 34-year-old Farmer looked exhausted and ready to be stopped. He stayed on his feet because Zepeda focused mostly on landing to the body due to the head movement that Tevin was using. He was elusive, but he couldn’t make Zepeda miss to the body. That’s where he lost the fight.

Farmer and some fans felt that he had done enough to earn the victory in that fight. The judges scored it 95-94 for Farmer, 95-94 for Zepeda, and 95-94 for Farmer. Boxing News 24 scored it for 9-1 for Zepeda. The judges didn’t seem to factor in Zepeda’s body punching in their scoring. They were focusing on just the headshots.

Farmer won the fourth from a flash knockdown he scored from a left hand that caught Zepeda coming forward. But other than the fourth, Zepeda dominated every round with his power shots, pressure, and bodywork.

Zepeda-Farmer Punch Stats

  • William Zepeda: 259 of 778 punches for 33.3%. Of the 259 shots Zepeda landed, 90 of them were to the body.
  • Tevin Farmer: 193 of 589 punches for 32.9%. He landed 45 body shots.

The rematch is seen as a stay-busy fight for Zepeda to keep him warm up for a fight against the winner of the February 22nd clash between WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield.

Zepeda would have likely been fighting Shakur next if he hadn’t suffered a hand injury. That wiped out his plans for a world title shot.
