Chris Eubank Jr expects to toy with Conor Benn when they meet this weekend.
As we draw closer to this weekend’s fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, Eubank Jr spoke about the excitement he feels with this opportunity closing in and what a win will do for his career going forward. Eubank Jr says he has no fear nor any doubt that he superior to Benn as he looks to uphold his family name.
Eubank on his mindset as his fight with Benn draws near
“I’m calm. I’m very at peace with where I am in my life and where I am in this fight. I really do believe that everything I envision, everything that I have trained for will come to fruition. So I’m at peace, I’m calm, I’m grateful to be here, I’m happy.
“I don’t have any chips on my shoulder as Conor Benn always points out. I don’t have any frustrations, I don’t have any ill will towards people. I just want to go out there and have fun.”
On how he sees the fight playing out
“Domination in every department that you can imagine, whether it’s boxing, whether its a gunfight, defense, offense, foot movement, speed, power — I am the superior boxer pugilist in each of those departments and so many more, which is why I’m so confident, which is why I’m so relaxed, which is why I’m so happy.”
On how his training camp has gone
“I guess you can say there’s been more fire in my soul, in my spirit, in my mindset. This is the biggest fight of my career, this is the most important to date, which is very rare for a 35-year-old fighter.”
On how he balances the desire to beat Benn with the fear or losing to him
“Do I look like I’m scared to you? Well, there you go. There is no balance.”
On making 160
“The serious weight cut doesn’t really come into play until a day or two before the fight so this is where you’re kind of starting to deplete but the main stuff happens 24 hours before the weigh-in. I will look like a different man at that point and I will feel like a different man, you know how it goes. But as of right now I feel good.”
On how he expects things to go in the ring
“He doesn’t touch me. I impose my will, I do everything that I want to do and I dispose of him when I’m good and ready…It’s impossible for this fight to go 12 rounds.”
On if he expects Benn to try to jump on him straight after the opening bell
“Maybe. Maybe. I hope he does for the fan’s sake. He says that’s what he’s going to do, it’s going to take a lot of balls to approach me like that. But if he does, wow, this is going to be fight of the year contender.”
On where he goes in his career after this fight
“The opportunities are there, the opponents are there, the titles are there. So this just puts me on a level to where I can get all these fights made like that. There’s always been politics in the past, it’s been hard to make fights, it’s been hard to get fights. After a win like this in a fight which surpassed what boxing is, it’s mainstream, you can fight whoever you want after that.
“Keeping that Eubank name that little bit in front of the Benn name — just a little bit, I’m not greedy, it doesn’t have to be miles, but we have to be on top. They can not get a win over us. I have to respect my father’s history, his legacy, what he achieved in his career. I can’t let him down, I can’t let myself down, I can’t let my fans down. This is a deeply personal and important fight for me and I can’t wait.”
