Vasily Lomachenko’s promoter, Bob Arum, says negotiations have started for a lightweight unification clash against WBA champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis late this year.
Cross-Platform Collaboration
IBF 135-lb champion Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) and Tank (30-0, 28 KOs) will fight on pay-per-view in a clash that could bring in many buys in this cross-platform bout. Tank with PBC and fights on Prime Video, whereas Top Rank promotes Lomachenko and competes on ESPN.
“It’s being talked about. The conversations are going on,” said Bob Arum to Dan Rafael’s substack site about the Gervonta Davis vs. Vasily Lomachenko fight.
Hopefully, for the sake of the fans, the fight put together because Tank Davis needs to step out of his comfort zone to start fighting A-level opposition. Fans are tired of seeing him beat mediocre guys like Frank Martin. Tank should have gotten past this level of opposition years ago, but he’s been content to play it safe and not take any risks.
Many younger boxing fans view this as a slam dunk win for Tank, with him easily knocking out this OG Lomachenko, whom they know little about.
Many fans weren’t around to see Lomachenko’s domination at 126 and 130 or see him win two Olympic gold medals. They just look at his age and assume he’s another one of Tank’s victims to blast to the moon. Those fans will be surprised if Tank loses this fight and is exposed.
A Fight Years in the Making
Davis-Lomachenko is a fight that has been talked about for many years, but it’s taken them until now for it to happen finally. That plays out well for the 29-year-old Tank Davis, as he’s considerably younger than the 36-year-old Lomachenko, but doesn’t guarantee victory because his skills are light years behind Loma’s.
The Ukrainian talent Lomachenko has a technical ability that Tank Davis can only imagine possessing. He would have had to develop his skills if Tank hadn’t been blessed with enormous punching power. He’s taken the easy way, depending on power alone to win his fights while ignoring working on the more complicated stuff of learning different techniques.
