The boxing community has moved to support Roy Jones Jr after he announced the death of his son DeAndre.
DeAndre Jones died on Saturday at the age of 32.
He had a twin brother, DeShaun, and alongside DeShaun and his cousin Dyllon Burnside once formed a hip-hop group known as 3D.
“Unfortunately, my son DeAndre took his life Saturday,” read a statement published on social media by Roy Jones Jr. “I’m so thankful that god allowed me to come home Friday night to spend the last night of his life with me and the family.
“I know a lot of people are going through tough times right now, but nothing is worth taking your own life. God gives it, and god should be the one to take it away.
“Please respect our privacy while my family and I process this loss. Thank you for the love and support.”
Andre Ward, who succeeded Jones Jr not only as one of America’s finest fighters but by also competing at super middleweight and light heavyweight, wrote, also on social media: “Please pray for my brother Roy Jones. This hurts.”
Cris Cyborg, a professional boxer and mixed martial artist, wrote: “My heart aches for you and my family. I pray you are surrounded by an abundance of love and god protects you and your family while giving his guidance as you grieve.”
Lou DiBella, who before becoming a promoter was influential at HBO when Jones Jr was at his near-unrivalled peak, posted: “My love to Roy and his entire family. I have experienced this devastating pain and can only wish them peace and healing. Prayers up for DeAndre, Roy, all family and friends.”
The IBF list Jones Jr among their former world champions, and wrote: “We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. May DeAndre rest in peace.”
The retired Tony Bellew, who not only, like Jones Jr, fought at light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight, but was once paid to act, wrote, simply: “RIP.”
