Is Anthony Joshua finished at the elite level following his knockout loss against Daniel Dubois?
For Anthony Joshua the recent loss against Dubois is a major setback. Joshua absorbed a great deal of punishment in that one, and it was a pretty one-sided fight from start to finish. Dubois set the tone early, performed brilliantly, and he beat him up in dominant fashion, dropping him 4 times along the way, the last of which earned Dubois the spectacular knockout victory.
This is now the 4th professional loss Joshua has suffered in his professional career, and this was by far the most brutal of the bunch. His first loss was a shocking upset against Andy Ruiz Jr, and his second and third losses both came against reigning heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk. The fight against Dubois provided AJ with the opportunity to become just the fourth boxer in history to become a three-time heavyweight champion, but that of course did not happen. Instead, AJ’s entire career trajectory has been badly disrupted after being stopped by a man he was expected to beat.
Where does Anthony Joshua go from here? That is a very difficult question to answer. Since suffering his first against Ruiz, the big questions surrounding Joshua have always centered around his mental state, specifically his ability to adapt and persevere and overcome adversity in the midst of a brutal and taxing battle. Those questions have been constant since that time, as Joshua has not been the same fighter he once was prior to the Ruiz loss, where he now typically seems less inclined (or unable) to dig down deep whenever things are not going his way.
