By Geoffrey Ciani: Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in a bout that was streamed on the streaming app service known as DAZN – IBF welterweight champion Jaron Boots Ennis put his title on the line against David Avanesyan.
For Ennis, this was the first time he put his IBF belt on the line. Indeed, this was the first time Ennis competed in a contest that had a major championship on the line, as he did not win that belt inside the ring. That belt previously belonged to Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, who had become the first undisputed world welterweight champion during the modern 4 belt era when he beat Errol Spence Jr in July of last year.
Crawford was stripped of the IBF belt last November, which was just a little over 4 months after he won the undisputed crown. This was a mighty peculiar situation because Spence held the IBF belt for just over 6 years, and during that stretch he only made a single IBF mandatory defense, and by the time he faced Crawford it had been more than 5 years since he made that lone IBF mandatory defense. So in 6+ years Spence only made one IBF mandatory defense, but the IBF stripped Bud a little over 4 months after he won the belt. As a result of all of this, Ennis was promoted from so-called ‘interim IBF champion’ to the real McCoy.

Ennis dominated most of the action against Avanesyan, and he dropped him in round 5. After round 5 had ended, Avanesyan’s corner stopped it and the fight was over, which was the first official championship win for the 27 year old Boots Ennis.
This edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide a quick detailed recap and review of the recent welterweight championship bout between Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and David Avanesyan. Please watch and enjoy the video for one man’s opinion. This is Rummy’s Corner (produced and narrated by Geoffrey Ciani).
