Mauricio Sulaiman, the WBC president, says he won’t be punishing Ryan Garcia for his positive PED test last April after this week’s one-year ban given to Kingry by the New York State Athletic Commission.
The New York Commission has given Ryan a one-year back-dated ban and will not be available to fight until April 20th, 2025.
Sulaiman feels Ryan needs “support” right now with what he’s dealing with in his life, and he’s not going to add to his problems. WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney wasn’t pleased to see Sulaiman supporting Ryan.
It’s admirable that WBC president Sulaiman supports Ryan Garcia rather than abandon him to the jackals who are sharpening their knives to dump on the superstar as well.
Fans on social media believe that the only reason the WBC stands by Ryan’s side is because he’s a fighter who represents money due to his stardom and potential for future mega-PPV clashes.
Uncertainty Surrounding Haney’s WBC Title
In Haney’s case, it’s unclear if he’ll hold onto his WBC 140-lb title after Top Rank won this week’s purse bid for Devin’s mandatory against #1 Sandor Martin. It sounds like Haney might vacate his WBC belt or have it stripped.
Since Haney hasn’t come out and asked if he will keep his WBC title, it makes sense why the sanctioning body would be circling their wagons around the superstar Ryan Garcia. Ideally, Haney should have decided by now if he will keep his WBC title and defend it against Martin.
Many are asking how will the @WBCBoxing punish @RyanGarcia
We don’t care to punish him. We want to help Ryan, the human being, he is suffering, going through difficulties . This not a matter of boxing , Ryan needs immediate support and attention NOW. Champ we are here for you pic.twitter.com/YrYFZQwMVZ— Mauricio Sulaiman (@wbcmoro) June 21, 2024
