The flyweight Jay Harris has announced his retirement at the age of 34.
Harris, of Wales, last fought in February 2024, when he outpointed Connor Butler in Liverpool, England in a fight for the British, Commonwealth and European titles.
Four years earlier he challenged Mexico’s Julio Cesar Martinez for the WBC title, but was stopped in the 10th round.
“I write this with a heavy heart to say that I am retiring from boxing,” he posted on social media. “After being out for a year, I think the decision has been made for me. “The past year, I’ve enjoyed some great family time without the stress of making weight. The thought of making 8st now was turning me sick.”
Harris had previously told his father and trainer Peter – a former British champion – and manager Gary Lockett that he was ready to retire before his date with Butler, until a sparring session changed his mind. He spoke, at that time, of his desire to one day become a trainer.
