Ben Whittaker will look to avenge his recent draw on a show that also includes Frazer Clarker, Lee Cutler, Sam Eggington, and Tyler Dennny
Tokyo silver medalist Ben Whittaker is officially set to rematch Liam Cameron atop an April 20th Boxxer show at Birmingham’s bp pulse LIVE.
Whittaker (8-0-1, 5 KO) entered the professional ranks with considerable fanfare thanks to an Olympic run that notably saw him beat Imam Khataev, but a string of iffy performances raised the question of whether there was enough substance behind his showmanship to make a real run at contention. That came to a head against Cameron (23-6-1, 10 KO), who took Whittaker’s best and looked poised to wear him down before both men went over the ropes in the sixth.
With Whittaker unable to continue due to a leg injury, the judges turned in a technical draw. Though Cameron was less than pleased with the outcome, he got the consolation prize of a Queensberry contract, plus what’s sure to be a big payday in the rematch.
Whittaker said: “This is an opportunity for me to give the fans a decisive result. There’s no doubt in my mind that this time there will be no room for controversy. This time we will finish it on my terms. To all the fans who supported me and even those that have doubted me, this one’s for you. April 20, I’m home and I’m going to give the people something special.”
Cameron said: “I’m pleased to get this fight confirmed. I feel like I was winning the last fight before he tried pretending to be a WWE star and pulled me over the top rope. I really believe I would have stopped him, but that’s in the past now, we’re ready to go on April 20. I want to thank my manager and my promoters Frank and George Warren for helping to get this rematch over the line. I look forward to getting in there and finishing the job.”
The show will also see heavyweight Frazer Clarke (8-1-1, 6 KO) look to bounce back from getting his face broken by Fabio Wardley against Ebenezer Tetteh (23-2, 20 KO), Lee Cutler (15-1, 7 KO) battle Sam Eggington (35-9, 20 KO), and Tyler Denny (19-3-3, 1 KO) take a tune-up against Elvis Ahorgah (13-3. 12 KO).
