Chris Eubank Jr’s promoter, Ben Shalom, states that September is not a good month for a stadium fight against superstar Canelo Alvarez in the UK.
Shalom feels staging the Canelo vs. Eubank Jr. fight in September would conflict with the Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois clash, which is scheduled for the 21st of that month at Wembley Stadium.
Shalom said the offer was for Eubank Jr (33-3, 24 KOs) to face Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) in Las Vegas. If Canelo had his eyes on fighting in the UK, he might not have been excited about bringing Eubank Jr. to the States because it’s not a matchup that American fans would want to watch live.
Canelo can fight many different fighters and generate more ticket sales in the U.S. than a fight with the 34-year-old Eubank Jr. The only interest in a fight with Eubank Jr. is if it is staged in the UK. Other than that, Eubank Jr. is a waste of time.
It’ll be interesting to see if Shalom will dig his heels into the sand and refuse to budge on his resistance to staging the Canelo-Eubank Jr. fight in the UK in September. They could talk themselves out of the fight with Canelo and be left with just the Conor Benn and Kell Brook matchups, which don’t compare.
“The difficulty we’ve had with that one is that with the ‘AJ’ card on September 21, it’s hard to envision another stadium card a week either side of that,” said promoter Shalom to Boxingscene about it being a good idea to stage a fight between Canelo and Eubank Jr. in the UK in a stadium fight due to the Joshua vs. Dubois clash on September 21st, which would be too close and hurt ticket sales.
This might be Eubank Jr’s last chance to fight for a world title and it definitely would be the only opportunity he’ll get to fight Canelo. Eubank Jr. already lost out on a chance to face a prime Gennadiy Golovkin in 2016 when the talks slowed. Promoter Eddie Hearn swooped in and matched Kell Brook against Golovkin.
