William Zepeda faces Giovanni Cabrera in a 12-round headliner event on July 6th in lightweight action on DAZN at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

Ranked #1 in IBF, WBA, and WBC, the punching machine Zepeda (30-0, 26 KOs) needs a win to stay in position to fight for a world title. With Zepeda’s ranking, he can’t be denied much longer for a world title shot.

Golden Boy Promotions are doing a good job of keeping Zepeda busy, matching him against the best available opponents to get him more experience and visibility.

Zepeda is arguably the most exciting fighter in the 135-lb division, but he’s still not a household name yet in the U.S. due to his lack of big-name opponents. In Zepeda’s recent fights, he’s beaten these fighters:

– Maxi Hughes: RTD 4
– Mercito Gesta: TKO 6
– Jaime Arboleda: KO 2
– Joseph Diaz: UD 12
– Rene Alvarado: UD 10

This fight should be interesting. Cabrera (22-1, 7 KOs) came close to defeating Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz last year in July, falling short with a 12-round split decision loss. If Cabrera fights like that against Zepeda, we might have an upset.

In 2022, Cabrera beat former amateur star Gabriel Flores Jr. by a one-sided ten round unanimous decision in a fight that got the attention of a lot of boxing fans. Flores Jr. is an excellent fighter, but the way that Cabrera handled him showed that he’s got the ability to capture a world title.

Zepeda, 27,  wanted to challenge WBC champion Shakur Stevenson, but the match failed to happen. That’s a fight that failed to happen, which isn’t surprising because the two are with different promotional companies and compete on separate networks.

“Just a few months after delivering an absolute drubbing of contender Maxi Hughes, Zepeda is looking to make yet another statement and position himself for world championship gold before the end of the year. Don’t blink, this fight is going to be an absolute barnburner,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya about his fighter Zepeda.
