Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia weighed in today successfully at their weigh-in on Friday, both looking great ahead of their headliner clash on Saturday night in Las Vegas, live on Prime Video.

Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) looked intense during his face-off with Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), and given the animosity that had developed earlier this week between him and promoter Oscar De La Hoya, I almost expected him to shove or swat him.

Munguia stayed out of the beef between Canelo and De La Hoya, so there was no reason for the mega-star Alvarez to be upset with him.

Weights:

  • Canelo Alvarez: 166 3/4 lbs. vs. Jaime Munguia: 167 1/2 lbs.
  • Mario Barrios 146.6 vs. Fabian Maidana 146.2
  • Brandon Figueroa 125.4 vs. Jessie Magdaleno 128.6
  • Eimantas Stanionis 146.6 vs. Gabriel Maestre 146.8

Munguia’s Freshness

Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo looked thin and had a stringy, drawn-out look, like someone who had lost too much muscle weight rather than water weight.

Canelo appears to have lost muscle, getting down to 168 during training camp, and that could backfire on him in this fight; it’s in Canelo’s best interest to try his best to knockout Munguia to prevent the fight from going into the later rounds.

In contrast, Munguia, a relative newcomer to the 168-lb division, appeared fresh and strong at the weight. If the fight goes into the later rounds, he could be better conditioned of the two. Canelo might need to think about moving up to 175 if he loses this fight or has problems winning.

Predictions and Comments

“Jaime looks in good form, he’s solid, he’s big and he looks fast,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya to DAZN Boxing, talking about Jaime Munguia after he weighed in on Friday. “It’s mind games,” said Osccar about Munguia putting a hand on Canelo’s shoulder after the two had faced off.

“I know Jaime is going to come to fight and lay it all on the line, but in the end, I feel like he might get caught,” said Caleb Plant to Fighthype, predicting a win for Canelo Alvarez over Jaime Munguia on Saturday night.

“Munguia is new to the division, and that might be his downfall. He might get clipped. I’m a fan of Jaime, I think he’s a great fighter, but I don’t think he’d well-rounded enough to not get caught for 12 rounds,” said Plant.
